ACT is a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy that helps you accept difficult thoughts and feelings while committing to action guided by your personal values.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT, pronounced as one word) works from the premise that psychological suffering often comes not from difficult thoughts and feelings themselves, but from our attempts to avoid, suppress or control them. The more we struggle with unwanted inner experiences, the more power they tend to have.
ACT teaches a set of core skills: mindful awareness of thoughts and feelings without being ruled by them; acceptance of what cannot be controlled; clarity about your personal values; and committed action - choosing how to move forward in line with what matters most to you, even when difficult feelings are present.
It is evidence-based and widely used for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, trauma and a range of other challenges. At Creuynni, practitioners trained in ACT integrate it with other approaches where helpful.
